On Friday, April 16, 2004, we made a spontaneous decision to take the Amtrak train to San Juan Capistrano. At about 9:30 that morning, we took the plunge and decided to catch the 10:12AM train. Luckily, we're only about 15 minutes from the train station, but it was still a scramble to get there. We arrived at the platform with only 3 minutes to spare!
What a fun adventure! It was only a 45 minute train ride each way, but the girls loved it. In Capistrano, we walked around the historic town of Los Rios (very small!), located near the train depot, and then headed to Sarducci's Restaurant at the depot for a delicious lunch. (We'd definitely eat there again!) Afterwards, we visited the Jones Family Mini Farm (aka petting zoo) and the girls got to go on a pony ride. We fully expected Kaitlyn (age 2 1/2) to change her mind at the last minute and run from the horse, but she loved every minute of it. Karlie (age 5) had trouble waiting in line for her turn -- she was so excited -- so we knew she'd do just fine on the horse. Afterwards, we walked the town a bit and had ice cream before heading back to the depot to catch the train home. The weather was beautiful -- sunny and 75 degrees -- so we couldn't have asked for a better day.
