Oh, how we love camping! We must, since we decided to schedule a trip over a big holiday weekend -- Presidents' Day! We headed off to Buellton, just a few miles from Solvang (about 30 minutes north of Santa Barbara), with the Cunningham family for another adventure. We left around 8:00 Friday night and, thanks to Rick’s great mapping skills, we hit very little traffic and arrived in just under three hours. We were thrilled! The kids slept most of the drive, so it was a very relaxing time for us.  The campground, Flying Flags RV Park, was very quiet once we arrived, so we found our spots (Nos. 8 & 9) and started the unhitching process. We stayed up until 2AM just talking and unwinding.

Our spots were very close together – in fact, our awning was within an inch of the Cunningham’s trailer. But we had trees and grass, plus we had spots together, so we were happy. (We still prefer the spots directly across from the playground, so we’ll shoot for these next time.) This campground is great because it so green with lots of grass and trees, plus things for the kids do (pool, playground, lots of places to ride bikes).

The Carriage at Los OlivosSaturday morning, we took a walk around the campground  and spent some time at the playground. Afterwards, we headed to Solvang for lunch. We hit stopped traffic on the way, so we turned around and headed to Santa Maria via the 101. On the way, we took a detour through Los Olivos, a quaint town with so much character.  (We never made it to Santa Maria.)   At Los Olivos, there were several places to taste wine and many restaurants and delis, not to mention the wonderful historic buildings that lined the streets. We grabbed sandwiches to go and headed to the park in the main part of town. We even took a 15-minute carriage ride through the town (thanks to Rex the horse), which we all loved. We succeeded in wearing out the kids, so we headed back to camp for naps and quiet time. That evening the kids rode bikes, played ball, and rode scooters until dark.

On Sunday, Kelly made her famous cinnamon french toast breakfast for us, complete with mimosas. With full bellies, we headed back to Solvang to walk the town. It was very busy, so our visit was short but sweet. The kids’ favorite part was sitting in the red Dutch shoe on the street corner. In the afternoon, the adults sat down at the picnic table and planned our Arizona trip that we scheduled for June of this year. It was a great day. Monday we headed home to the rat race, but had another trip in April to forward to – Vail Lake in Temecula for Easter!
